Germany – Weingut Schloss Ortenberg Weisser Burgunder 2014

Domaine and vineyard

The Weingut Schloss Ortenberg was founded in 1997 by the merger of two local wineries. The first, known as San Andreas Winery has its roots in the fourteenth century when the citizens of Offenburg founded the hospital of the poor San Andreas. From that moment, thanks to continuous donations of the faithful, the hospital's properties have increased. And since 1500, in this structure, it produced wine. Despite many vicissitudes, the production has remained active to the present day. Since 1975, the winery belongs to the SADT Offenburg with adjoining 29 hectares of land planted with vines.
The second winery, the Ortenau winery, started to have a certain resonance in the Second World War, during the reconstruction, when to the land already belonging to this winery are added 6.5 hectares around the beautiful castle of Ortenberg. And on such land they begin a series of experiments to determine what were the best grapes to grow in this region, both to improve the vineyard management techniques and health of plants. Here, too, further donations have expanded the total vineyard area. In 1992 the Ortenau wine cellar becomes "Weinbauversuchsgut of Ortenaukreis."
In 1997, as already mentioned, the two wineries come together to create the Weingut Schloss Ortenberg, Winery with assets of vineyards extending over 45 hectares. The result is an extremely vast and varied production by type, color and expectations, even if white wines remain the masters of their production landscape.

I admit that Germany, both from the touristic point of view, both from the wine remains for me an unknown land. And, for better or for worse, I cannot draw a general opinion from just one bottle. But it's a beginning, an incentive to study the local production and to taste more and more products. I tried to taste this wine both at the recommended temperature and at room temperature. In the first case it came out an acid and fresh wine with delicate scents and aromas. In the second case the acidity completely covered all the other features of the wine and the weak body did not help. In essence it remains a product not memorable but certainly worth a try, and try again.
