Italy – Bulfon Sciaglìn Extra Dry

Domaine and vineyard
The winery Emilio Bulfon is located in the foothills of the Pordenone province, surrounded by forests, hills and the banks of the Tagliamento river. The domaine is extended with its vineyards in the area which includes the towns of Castelnuovo del Friuli and Pinzano al Tagliamento, an area in the hills, it consists of 15.90 hectares of which 11 are planted with native varieties exclusively retrieved Friuli vineyard.
Since 2006 the company promotes not only wines, but also the rich heritage of history and art of the area. Not surprisingly, the company logo, and the label of wines, now unmistakable, are inspired by a detail of a fresco of medieval origin, present in the Church of St. Mary of the Beaten Valeriano, depicting "The Last Supper".
The heart of the company's philosophy is represented by the rediscovery and the recovery of ancient vines Friulian cultivated for centuries in the hills of Western Friuli. Ancient vines that up to thirty years ago seemed to have disappeared but that of Emilio Bulfon passion, with the help of Naomi and sons Lorenzo and Alberta, has revived in new life and carefully identified, selected and replanted, with the collaboration of the Experimental Institute of Conegliano ampelographers experts.

The wine
The Bulfon Sciaglin Extra Dry is a 100% sciaglin; the vineyard where it comes from is located in the villages of Pinzano al Tagliamento and Castelnovo del Friuli on terroir of medium texture. Vines are trained in simple and double Guyot, with a density of 4000 vines per hectare and an average yield of 70-80 hl/ha.
The wine itself is a Charmat method sparkling wine, fermented at a controlled temperature with soft pressing of the grapes. It follows fermentation in autoclave and subsequent aging on the lees for about two months
The native grape Sciaglìn, probably originated from "schiavolino" meaning wine Slavia, land located on the edge of the Julian Alps. Now it is grown only in the area of Pinzano al Tagliamento and Castelnovo del Friuli, as Regional regulation.

Food and wine pairing
Wine perfect for appetizers; it is also particularly suitable to be paired with dishes based on fish.

First contact with the grape varieties re-discovered by Bulfon. The Sciaglin in this dry and sparkling version shows a brilliant color and a perlage as light as evanescent. Both in the olfactory and the tasting side, this wine has very delicate flavours and aromas, all connected to white flowers and fruits (pear). A wine that has not really satisfied my expectations.
