Francia – Vin & Pic Baco 2014

Domaine and vineyard
The wine company Vin et Pic (also known as Mondon) was founded in 1974 by the passion of Fernand and Daniel Mondon. The company is located in the Loire region, more precisely the plain of the Forez, nestled between the Massif Central and the Loire itself, the volcano of Saint Romain le Puy site.
The vineyards of the company cover a total area of 6.5 hectares, with a total production of about 40,000 bottles a year.
The grape varieties are Gamay, hybrides 54/55 Bacco, Viognier, Chardonnay, Syrah and all of their wine labels have been designed by Philippe LOUISGRAND.

The wine
The Baco Noir grapes come from the bowers of the villages in the area rentals around Saint Romain le Puy that, within living memory, has not undergone any treatment. 15 days of maceration and a slight addition of sulphites at bottling are the two moments marking the production of this wine. The grapes are harvested when in an advanced state of maturity in order to eliminate its wild characteristics that remain rather obvious when the harvest comes in due time.
The BACO NOIR is the only grape variety vitis-riparian species have been commercialized. It is a hybrid that was founded in 1902 at the hands of François Baco from the crossing of Folle Blanche and Riparia Grand hairless. From this grape variety we can obtain wines of high alcohol percentage, heavily loaded in color and slightly bitter.

The Baco Noir was unknown to me. I tasted, in home-made production, both the Clinton and the Noah but this remained a novelty, even more so in commercial production. The wine, although the grapes are harvested overripe to smooth the wild side, maintains a slight initial effervescence misleading analysis of taste. After a moment the wine displays all its true characteristics, with a mix of red fruits and tannins combined with the freshness and the typical bitter touch of this grape variety. An unstable equilibrium in the end, that does not allow to appreciate it all the way.
